Permission to travel to Britain – Tier 4 (General) Student

If you are not from the European Union, you should obtain some form of entry clearance from your nearest British Embassy or High Commission. Remember: you should request the right visa to stay in the UK. Make sure that you obtain a student visa, not a visitor visa, as you will not be able to extend your stay as a student with the visitor visa.

If you are from a visa national country you must apply for a visa from the British High Commission or Embassy in your country of residence (see http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoapply/wheretoapply) for permission to come to the UK as a ‘student’. Permission to come to the UK is called ‘entry clearance’. You should wait until you have obtained entry clearance before you book any non-refundable travel tickets.

The UK Border Agency operates a point-based system for immigration. As an adult wishing to apply for entry clearance to study a higher education programme in the UK, you must apply as a ‘Tier 4 (General) Student’. The UK Border Agency sometimes refers to Tier 4 (General) Students as ‘adult students’. Tier 4 is the part of the immigration system that deals with students.f

When you apply for your visa, you will need to provide documents such as a valid passport, sponsor letter from IBAM and evidence that you are able to meet the costs of studying in the UK, including tuition fees and additional living expenses of £600 per month (or £800 per month for student living in inner London).

You need 40 points to be able to apply for a student visa and must provide the proof needed with your application form.

Points for initial applications and for extensions are awarded as follows:

Immigration Procedures on Arrival

Registration with the Police
Nationals of certain countries or territories are required to register with the Police upon arrival in the UK. If you need to register, this requirement will be written in your passport.

There is no Police Registration office in Coventry. The nearest venue is at the Police Headquarters in Birmingham, approximately 30 minutes from Coventry. The Immigration Department will already have details of all registering students to facilitate the process.

If you are not able to travel on the IBAM bus, you should follow the instructions in your passport and register within seven days.

To register you will need:

  • your current Passport;
  • 2 recent Passport-sized colour photographs;
  • your acceptance letter from IBAM;
  • proof of your address in the UK;
  • money to pay the registration fee.

Extending your Visa to stay in the UK

In order to remain in the UK as a student, you have to meet and be able to prove the following UK Border Agency (UKBA) criteria:

(i)    You are a full-time student, enrolled on a course of not less than 15 hours per week.
(ii)    You have enough money to maintain yourself and any dependant without recourse to public funds and without working.
(iii)    You intend to leave the UK on completion of your studies.
(iv)    You will study for an approved qualification at a Study centre registered as a recognised sponsor by UKBA

It is essential that you apply to the Home Office to renew your extension of stay before the date that your current permission to stay runs out.  Since the Home Office is normally extremely busy processing applications, it is in your best interest to apply for an extension at least one month in advance.

In order to extend your Visa, please see the Registrar or Director of Admissions.  You will be given a home Office form for completion.

The address of the Home Office is:

The Home Office
Immigration & Nationality Department
Lunar House, Wellesley Road
Croydon, Surrey CR9 2BY

Visa Responsibilities

Coming to the UK with a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa means that you as a student (and IBAM as a sponsor) must fulfill certain conditions and obligations. These are listed below. Failure to follow these conditions could result in your visa being cancelled and or other penalties.

You must tell the UK Border Agency (UKBA) if you

  • change your personal details, e.g., your name if you get married, or your nationality
  • receive a new passport
  • are given any criminal convictions
  • change your address
  • change your telephone or mobile number or your email address
  • or if any of your dependant’s change their details, or if they stop being your dependant.

To tell the UKBA of these changes, you need to complete a form. This form is available on-line at: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier1/poststudy/changeofcircumstancesform/

In addition you must also tell IBAM if you:

  • change your address
  • change your telephone, mobile phone number or email address.

To advise the UKBA of these changes, you should complete a form. This form is available on-line at http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/tier1/poststudy/changeofcircumstancesform/

Switching to IBAM from another institution

If you have been issued a Tier 4 (General) Student visa and you wish to change to a different university or college, i.e., change your immigration sponsor from IBAM to another institution, or change from another institution to IBAM, then you should read this advice carefully.

Date visa was issued
What to do

Your visa application was made before Tier 4 was introduced on the 31st March 2009

You can change courses without the need to inform the UK Border Agency

Your student visa application was made under Tier 4 after 31st March 2009 and your visa was issued before 5th October 2009.

You will need to register your new course and sponsor details with the UK Border Agency. You need only receive the auto-reply confirming receipt of their email (and not the decision) to start switching to your new sponsor. If a student has notified UKBA of a change of sponsor, they may commence their new course prior to receiving permission but should be aware that they do so at their own risk as permission could be refused.

To do this, send an email to MigrantReporting@ukba.gsi.gov.uk

The email must give full details of your previous course, and include details of your new course, incuding:

1. Name of University
2. University Sponsor Licence Number:
3. Full Course Title
4. Start date of your new course
5. End date of your new course.

The UK Border Agency will acknowledge receipt of the email and you may then start the new course. Later you will receive confirmation or refusal of permission to continue the course. If permission to switch to attend IBAM refused, please make immediate contact with IBAM for further guidance.

If your student visa application was made (and issued) under Tier 4 after 5th October 2009.

You will need to make a new Tier 4 visa application if wishing to change sponsor. This will mean completing an Visa Extension application form, and submitting a fee.

Please note: Students must not start a new course until the new application for leave has been approved by UKBA.

A student may leave his/her original sponsor before the new application for leave has been decided, but this is at the student's own risk because if the new application for leave is refused,the student may not be able to return to the course with the original sponsor.
