RDI at Promote trade fair, Yaounde, Cameroon

RDI recently attended the Promote trade fair in Yaounde, Cameroon. Promote is the largest trade fair in Central Africa. It takes place every three years and attracts over 1500 exhibitors and 110,000 visitors.

RDI had a stand in the ‘British Pavilion’ in association with the British High Commission and other British companies such as Land Rover and Guinness.

"There’s a lot of interest in RDI’s programmes here" says Peter Essex, RDI’s Cameroon representative. "We have over 200 students here and demand for RDI’s programmes, especially the MBA, is very strong."

"In the past, only the rich in Africa had access to top quality education, because it was necessary to travel to Europe or the USA. Now people here can get the same education at a fraction of the price – and they can work and study at the same time."

So why study with RDI?

"There’s a feeling that here in Africa the aid-based approach to development has not worked and that the way forward for Africa is to create world class companies which compete on a level playing field with US and European firms. This was the Asian approach, and it’s working. But to create and build these companies you need world-class managers - and that’s where we come in."

Assisting at the RDI stand is Harmony Baran A Beigoll who is studying for a Bachelors Degree in Business Marketing.

"I wanted to gain work experience and a UK degree at the same time", says Harmony. "It’s interesting, motivating and rewarding because I can apply the knowledge I gain in my personal and professional life. The Wales support team are fantastic and the different networks are really interesting. I’m going to continue with my MBA online, with RDI of course."

Peter continues to say "Africa is the last emerging market, it is rich in natural and human resources and it’s going to grow dramatically over the next few years. Investors are coming in and they’re looking for qualified managers who know the local environment. Our students are taking advantage of this, and we’re here to help them succeed."
