190,000 students without a place this year 

New figures released today from UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admission System) confirm that nearly 190,000 applicants failed to get a university place this year.

This figure is up from 139,520 the year before. This figure represents 27% of all applications through UCAS this year.

This large number of unplaced students, combined with the potential increase in fees proposed by Lord Browne's report last week could have a massive effect on applications for 2011.

The rise in demand for places is being put down to applicants looking for better job security and to stand out in a competitive jobs market.

University is not the only option
