A) 29

Q) Where do you live?

A) Newark

Q) Which course are you currently studying?

A) HNC/D Business & Management

Q) What are your living circumstances?

A) I live with my long term partner who I met at work!

Q) Do you work full-time or part-time and where?

A) I work full time as manager of a youth charity and social enterprise in Newark, Nottinghamshire in the UK

Q) Why did you choose RDI?

A) I chose RDI after reading good reviews on the internet, and just as importantly having a good customer experience whilst calling an advisor regarding help and information about the courses on offer. I found RDI to be competitive with prices whilst offering a good range of courses in association with universities.

Q) Did you always think you'd be studying for your qualifications?

A) I always wanted to get a degree, however personal circumstances growing up meant I had to enter employment as a means to bringing in income. It was not really feasible to go away to university. I did however have an immense interest in learning and knew I would go on to study for a degree at some point.

Q) Any adversity or issues along the way?

A)  I had to be the main breadwinner growing up in a single parent family, as the eldest, having to support my mum with bringing in an income. That was character building and an education in lots of ways, but resulted in me delaying my further education. I have since done very well at work, and now enrolled on the RDI Business HND with the hope of completing a degree.

Q) How has Higher Education changed your career, personal life or you as a person?

A) Studying within higher education offers you greater credibility within your job role, but also offers many things such as confidence, self-esteem and motivation. Academic study doesn't just teach you "things" but also how to think, this skill itself is invaluable in all areas of life.

Q) What do you believe are the main benefits of distance learning?

A) The main benefits of distance learning are flexibility, learning with other learners from around the world, ability to earn income whilst fulfilling ambitions of HE study, studying at a pace that suits you with support there when you need it, and the ability to combine a personal and family life along with studying. It is also more cost effective than most traditional routes of gaining a degree.

Q) What will your qualification give you and what is next?

A) This course will give me a HND Business Management, I will then enroll on the BA (Hons) top up.

Q) Anything you'd like to add?

A) I would encourage anybody to study via distance learning, and to study in general. If like me a traditional route into further education wasn't available then flexible distance learning offers a very viable alternative. I believe that everyone has a great potential, but not all people are in the the same circumstances, this has affected why I work in the sector I do, to help disadvantaged young people, but why I also believe that education is a thing that should be grabbed hold of and used to enhance your own personal and professional development.
