Stars in their eyes

Some modules are like well known celebrities.  The reason why you are putting yourself through all this stress in the first place is just so you can meet that hero you have been waiting for.  But like meeting celebrities, you panic what its going to be like.  Will they be arrogant, kind, inspiring or just really boring? 

Sometimes you think, ‘I don’t even like football so why would I want to meet Dennis Bergkamp?’ (Arsenal 1995 – 2006), but actually he was a genuinely remarkable bloke... this can be like the modules on my MBA.

Richard Cockerill

This celebrity is the Leicester Tigers Coach and former England rugby player, the guy who did not walk away from the All Blacks Haka in 1997.  Someone who I would be comfortable meeting but secretly be overwhelmed by talking to.

This is like the Marketing module.  I know Marketing from working in a communications department but I know I only know the very basics of marketing.  It is a module in my comfort zone but it is also something I know is not as easy as it first appears.

James Blunt

A singer who regularly plays for the British Army.  I am not a fan, but I would recognise him on the street.  Everyone would listen to his music but he is not to everyones taste.  This is much like finance for me.  I know I need it in the background but I wouldn’t choose to do it, as I could cope with the music at a summer party but I would not buy his album.

Finance was that celebrity who would be awkward to meet.  I don’t know much about it but I know without it, businesses would fail.  Just as with James Blunt music industry just would not be complete without his soulful music.

I cringed at the idea of learning about finance, I just am not programmed to do numbers, but it was a pleasant surprise to have an interesting course with an incredibly helpful tutor explaining just how to get the most from this ‘celebrity'

Tom Cruise

Actor, heart-throb, secret crush.  I don’t mind that his nose is slightly wonky!  This is the man I am here to see. The celebrity I am here for, the celebrity that time slows down for. I want to know everything about him!

The Project management module is my Tom Cruise.  I want to know how to put all the other units together to do fantastically at the Project management module. This is the unit I want to focus on and learn all about.
